Principles of Mediation

Mediation is...

Voluntary: No one is forced to participate in Mediation. At any point in the process each party and the Mediators can walk away without fear of punishment.

Confidential: Mediators take an oath of Confidentiality. Information from interviews and meditations will not be made public and cannot be used in court without direct consent of the parties involved. Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Chapter 233, Section 23C of the General Laws.

Non-judgmental: Mediators do not take sides, they do not decide who is right and who is wrong. Mediators work equally hard for both Parties.

Self-Directed: Parties must want to work it out. They make up their own solution. Mediators do not give advice.

Future Oriented: Mediation is an opportunity to make a plan for the future.
