LeRoy
LeRoy D. Gibson is a community and organizational leader with over 20 years of experience in youth and family advocacy, program development, and community & stakeholder engagement. LeRoy focuses on creating pathways for equitable access to opportunities for youth and their families and successfully implementing community-driven approaches to increase civic engagement. As a proud American Born Black Cantabridgian who grew up in North Cambridge’s Rindge Towers Apartments during the tumultuous 80s and 90s, LeRoy’s lived experiences provide him with a deep understanding of how and why family situations, environmental factors, and access, or lack thereof, to opportunities, can impact the trajectory of youth. He is a dedicated father and husband who knows and lives by the philosophy, “It takes a village.” His caring nature and mentorship have led to life-long friendships with his students, student-athletes, and their families that transcend the institutions he both currently and once served.
LeRoy is the Student Success Coach and Co-Director of College & Career Readiness for Cambridge Public Schools High School Extension Program. He has tirelessly worked with and for the District’s most marginalized population and their families for the past 14 years. LeRoy co-founded and served as the inaugural Director of the Cambridge Pride for the first seven years of the program's existence. This program brings together the city of Cambridge youth, the Cambridge Department of Human Services, and the Cambridge Police Department to facilitate youth leadership, develop a way to bridge the gap between black and brown youth and their families within the community, and law enforcement and enhance engagement in the city youth centers by using basketball as a catalyst for encouraging health & wellness, competitive extracurricular activity, and building confidence in middle school aged youth. He has also served in a leadership capacity in his role as the Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach for Bunker Hill Community College from 2009 - 2017. Currently, he serves as the Co-Chair of the Board of Directors at Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation. Additionally, he is a Community Organizing & Resident Engagement Committee member at CSNDC. LeRoy is a distinguished alumnus of the HBCU Clark Atlanta University and Cambridge College and holds a B.A. in Multidisciplinary Studies.
